Using Button Coding with VEX AIM

The VEX AIM Coding Robot's built-in Button Coding project allows you to program movement and kicking actions using either the robot's touchscreen buttons or the One Stick Controller. This guide walks you through building, launching, and clearing your coding projects.

Building a Project

The robot screen with the Button Coding icon showing in the center.

Navigate to the Button Coding project in the main menu, and tap to select it.

The circular interface with the five colored segments is shown without any highlights or outlines. The center contains the standard VEX logo.

The button interface will show on the screen. Each button represents one robot behavior. To build a project, sequence button presses in the order you wish the robot to carry out the movements.

The same circular layout with the top teal segment containing an upward arrow outlined in red, highlighting the up direction.

A VEX controller shows four directional buttons on the right side, each with a different colored arrow. The top green triangle button is highlighted with a yellow glow, indicating it is being pressed.

Pressing the Forward button on the screen or the Up arrow button on the controller will move the robot forward approximately 3 inches, or one square on the Field.

The pink segment on the right with a curved arrow pointing right is outlined in red, indicating the rightward direction.

The same VEX controller with the right magenta triangle button highlighted in yellow, showing it is currently selected or pressed.

Pressing the Right button on the screen or the Right arrow button on the controller will turn the robot 90 degrees to the right.

The navy segment on the left with a curved arrow pointing left is outlined in red, highlighting the leftward direction.

The controller again with the left blue triangle button highlighted in yellow, indicating it is the active input.

Pressing the Left button on the screen or the Left arrow button on the controller will turn the robot 90 degrees to the left.

The red-orange segment at the bottom with a shoe kicking icon is outlined in red, representing a kick or strike action.

The bottom orange triangle button on the controller is highlighted in yellow, showing it is currently being pressed.

Pressing the Kick button on the screen or the Down arrow button on the controller will activate the robot's kicker to kick.

Identical interface again, but the center now displays a green circle with the number 1. The green circle is outlined in red.

Each time a button is pressed, the number in the center Start button will count up, indicating the button press has been saved.

The same circular interface, now showing a green circle with the number 4 inside it at the center. The green circle replaces the VEX logo and is outlined in red.

Continue pressing the buttons to add behaviors to your project. The counter in the center Start button will increase for each button press.

Starting a Project

Identical interface again, but the center now displays a green circle with the number 1. The green circle is outlined in red.

To start the project, press the green Start button.

As the project is running, the buttons will highlight individually as each behavior is executed by the robot.

You can also start a project with the controller by pressing the joystick button.

Stopping a Project

The following methods will stop a running project without deleting it.

Press anywhere on the robot's screen to stop a running project.

Or, press the joystick button to stop a running project.

Erasing a Project

The following methods will clear a project from the robot.

Lift the robot and shake the robot by hand, until you hear the erasing sound.

Or, quickly move the controller's joystick back and forth until you hear the erasing sound.

A circular interface is divided into five colored segments: teal at the top with an upward arrow, pink on the right with a curved arrow, red-orange at the bottom with a shoe kicking icon, navy on the left with a curved arrow, and turquoise in the center with the VEX logo. The center VEX button is outlined in red.

When a project is erased, the counter in the center Start button will be cleared, and the VEX symbol will show.
